About Hortus Alkmaar

Where there is less and less room for greenery, every piece of nature must be cherished. This also applies to the Hortus Alkmaar, where medicinal herbs and plants have been growing organically for years, right in the middle of the city! The gardens have special significance for Alkmaar. For example, visitors can relax and find their inspiration there, and schools also visit the gardens to teach children more about the importance of nature.

Problem

The importance of these gardens is great. So the blow that the land on which the gardens lie was sold to a property developer came all the harder. The land could be bought back, but for a considerable amount of money.

Solution

The Hortus Alkmaar did not give up and accepted the challenge. They called in us for this and in cooperation with the creative people from boo!brandbuilers, we had a campaign strategy in no time. This strategy, which focused on raising awareness and collecting donations, included a new house style, website and an online & offline activation campaign.

Result

And the result? The Hortus Alkmaar is saved! Because of the attention online (social) and offline (newspapers and TV) many people came into action. They donated an amount of money or became treasurer of the Hortus and expressed their concerns about survival through multiple channels. It also ended up on the table of the municipality, which decided to support the Hortus Alkmaar with new land a stone’s throw away from the existing gardens. The municipality also made funds available to support the Hortus Alkmaar in setting up the new gardens and cleaning up the land for biological purposes.
